Rules of Monopoly Junior

Monopoly Junior Rules

Monopoly Junior is a simplified version of Monopoly for children. It is played with 2 to 4 players. To facilitate the game, properties are called amusements instead and when a player buys an amusement they place a “ticket booth” on it.

Box Contents

This is what you’re going to find in the Monopoly Junior box:

  • The gameboard.
  • 25 chance cards.
  • 48 ticket booths (12 booths per each of the 4 colors).
  • A wad of Monopoly banknotes.
  • A die.
  • 4 car tokens (each one is of a different color).

Setup

  • One of the players is chosen to be the banker. It is important for the banker to differentiate the bank’s money from their own. 🙂
  • Each player must choose a car token and put it on the Go space.
  • Each player must take 10 ticket booths that match the color of their car.
  • Shuffle the chance cards and place them in the middle of the board face down on the space designated for them.
  • The banker gives each player 31 cash in banknotes in the following way:
    • Five tickets of 1
    • Four tickets of 2
    • Three tickets of 3
    • One ticket of 4
    • One ticket of 5

Before the start of the game, each player rolls the die. The player who rolls the highest number starts the game.

Gameplay

Each turn a player rolls the die and advances their car according to the number shown on the die. When a player lands on a space they must follow the instructions indicated on that space. When they’re finished they pass the die to the next player.

Amusement Spaces

Amusements in Monopoly Junior are the equivalent of properties in the original Monopoly.

In Monopoly Junior, players have ticket booths to indicate which player owns which amusement instead of the title deed cards in the classic version.

Unowned Amusements

When a player lands on an amusement space that nobody owns (doesn’t have a ticket booth on it) that player pays the bank the amount indicated on that space. They then place one of their ticket booths on that space. That player is now the owner of that amusement.

Owned Amusements

When a player lands on an amusement space and an opponent’s ticket booth is already there (indicating that the opponent owns that amusement), then the former must pay the latter (the owner) the amount indicated on that space. If the owner of this amusement also owns the second amusement of the same color, then the player who lands there will have to pay double the amount indicated on the space.

Other Spaces

Monopoly Junior Board
  • Go space: Each time a player passes or lands on this space they receive 2 cash from the bank.
  • Railroad spaces: When a player lands on a Railroad space, they must roll the die again and follow the instructions of the space they land on.
  • Fireworks or Water Show spaces: When a player lands on one of those spaces, they must pay 2 cash to watch the show. The money paid is to be placed on the space titled Uncle Pennybags’ Loose Change.
  • Uncle Pennybags’ Loose Change space: The player who lands on this space collects all the banknotes that are there.
  • Rest Rooms space: This is the equivalent of the Jail space in classic Monopoly. Nothing happens when you land on this space, you play the next turn as normal (similar to Just Visiting in classic Monopoly).
  • Go to the Rest Rooms space: When a player lands on this space, they must place 3 cash on the Uncle Pennybags’ Loose Change space and move their car to the Rest Rooms space. This doesn’t count as passing through the Go space and therefore the player doesn’t collect 2 cash from the bank. The player can play the next turn as normal.

Chance Cards

When a player lands on a chance space, they must draw the chance card that’s on top and follow the instructions given in it. The player then places that card back under the rest of the chance cards. A chance card can be a Go To card or a Free Ticket Booth card.

  • Go To… cards: When a player draws this card, they must follow the instructions by going directly to the space indicated on it. If the player passes through the Go space, they receive 2 cash from the bank.
  • Free Ticket Booth cards: When a player draws this card, they must find the amusement on the board that matches the color of the card drawn. If one of the amusement spaces is empty, then they can place one of their ticket booths on it. If both amusement spaces are occupied by two ticket booths of different colors, they can replace one of the ticket booths with one of their own. On the other hand, if the two amusement spaces are occupied by two ticket booths of the same color, the player cannot do anything. They must put the chance card back under the rest of the cards and draw a new one. This is the only time drawing a chance card twice in the same turn is allowed.

Two-Player Game

When the game is played by just two players, they receive 12 ticket booths each. This is the only rule that changes in a two-player game.

Winning the Game

The game ends when one of the players has no more money. That player is therefore declared bankrupt. Each of the other players must then add up the money they have and the player with the most money is, of course, the winner.

In a game with two players, the player who goes bankrupt first loses and the other player wins.
