When you decide to play roulette, whether in real life at a casino, at a party, or virtually on an app, you often have a choice between two versions: the English version and the French version. Although these two versions may not seem that different, there are a few essential differences to take note of. So, how can you tell if you’re playing French Roulette or its English counterpart?
English Roulette: coloured chips
The main difference between these two versions of roulette lies in the chips. In English Roulette, when players arrive at the table, they must first exchange their value chips with coloured chips. The dealer gives each player a specific chip colour. Of course, each coloured chip has its own value, and the dealer is responsible for keeping to it.
In French Roulette, players play directly with the casino’s own value chips.
Chips mean croupiers
Why did English roulette choose to use single-colored chips ? The answer is simple : there is only one dealer. With colored chips, there is no risk that the dealer will make a mistake by confusing which player made which bet.
If each player is given a different color than the others, it becomes easy to recognize the bets and make payments without errors.
On the other hand, in French roulette, the casino uses its own value chips, and each player likely has the same value chips. This can quickly become a problem for the dealer. To counter this problem, the other difference between the two versions of roulette is that in French roulette, each player is assigned a personal dealer.
This dealer is responsible for making the bets, checking the wins and losses, and paying the player. Therefore, there is not one dealer per table as in English roulette, but one dealer for each player present at the table.
