Rory's Story Cubes
Rory’s Story Cubes

Pros

✓ Could be played solo or in a group.
✓ Stimulates the players’ imagination.
✓ The duration of the game varies depending on the number of players.

Cons

✕ The game can last for hours.
✕ Each player gets only one go.

Characteristics

● Brand: Zygomatic
● Number of players: 1 to 12
● Age: 6 years and over
● Duration of a game: 15 to 180 minutes
● Game type: History, invention, imagination

The game has 9 dice. Each side of a die displays a character, creature, place, or object from the Harry Potter universe. The first player rolls the dice and creates a story by connecting the 9 visible sides. There is only one rule, all the 9 dice must be used to compose the story.

The next player rolls the dice and continues the story, imagining the second chapter. The other players do the same, ensuring that there is a connection between each chapter and the previous. The last player tries to deliver a logical and compelling conclusion to the story.

Story Cubes can be played solo or with a maximum of 12 players. It doesn’t matter how old the players are, as the game can be easily played by all age groups. Needless to say, the more players there are, the longer the game lasts.

Our opinion: The best part of Story Cubes is it encourages the players to use their imagination. Everyone gets a chance to create a chapter based on the sides shown on the dice. However, don’t forget that each chapter must be connected to the one before.

Battle at Hogwarts
Battle at Hogwarts

Pros

✓ A captivating and eventful game.
✓ Each player gets to choose their character.
✓ Players are all members of the same team.

Cons

✕ A long game as there are several decks for each year.
✕ Requires good knowledge of the saga.

Characteristics

● Brand: Asmodee
● Number of players: 2 to 4
● Age: 11 years and over
● Duration of a game: 30 to 210 minutes
● Game type: Strategy, deckbuilding

Players join forces to defend Hogwarts. During the course of the game, the players will take the roles of Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Neville. They have a common goal: to prevent Lord Voldemort from taking over Hogwarts. The game consists of 7 decks, each representing a chapter of Harry Potter. The decks are opened in ascending order.

Each deck indicates the location of the battle, enemy attacks, and actions to be taken. The actions of the Dark Arts and the Villain are revealed between the players’ turns. The players will therefore have to draw cards to help them defeat their enemies

The team moves on to the second deck, provided they were able to win the battle in the first deck. Once they have won the second battle as well, they move on to the third deck, and so on.

Players can inflict damage to the Villain or recharge their health. Using the Influence Tokens, they buy cards, which enable them to attack the Villains or heal themselves.

The game is won if the players win the battles of every deck. However, if the Villains win the battle, then the players won’t be able to move to the next deck yet.

Our opinion: This is a complete game for all big fans of the saga. Players must understand that they are not competitors and learn to help each other.

✓ The inclusion of the saga makes Cluedo more exciting.
✓ Enables players to feel like detectives.
✓ Gameplay is full of twists and turns.

Cons

✕ Requires a lot of attention to detail.
✕ The rules are not within the reach of children.

Characteristics

● Brand: Winning Moves
● Number of players: 3 to 5
● Age: 9 years and over
● Duration of a game: 45 minutes
● Game type: Investigation, adventure

The entire game takes place in the universe of Harry Potter. The objective is to find the student who’s disappeared. The character who disappears is randomly drawn from six cards. Each player moves according to the dice thrown. If a player draws a dark card, they suffer the effects of that card, unless they have a help card.

The player whose birthday is next takes the first turn. They roll the two dice, and move their token according to the numbers shown. Players will often have to turn the wheel, which will cause them to constantly change their strategies and explore new locations. Each player has the right to make an accusation, defining the kidnapper, the weapon they’ve used, and the location of the missing student.

When a player is sure that they have solved the mystery, they can run to the Burrow to make their accusation. To make an accusation, the player compares their information with that contained in the confidential file. The player who makes an accusation with the right combination wins the game. If they are wrong, the player who made the accusation is eliminated. However, they continue to expose their cards to other players, but they can no longer move.

Our opinion: The game allows players to feel like true detectives and enjoy the fascinating world of Harry Potter. However, it is necessary to pay attention to the smallest of details lest you make the wrong decision as to which action should be taken. New players should, therefore, take their time reading the rules of the game.

For example, blue contains questions regarding Hogwarts, certain locations, and transportation; purple is for spells, potions, and other forms of magic; orange is for animals, magical creatures and beings; etc.

Players take turns rolling the die. Each turn, the player whose turn it is will have to answer a question from the category they landed on. The questions are read aloud by the player to their left. If the player answers the question correctly, they can play another turn.

The goal of the game is for a player to be the first one to collect all 6 wedges before they answer a final question. If the player answers the final question correctly, they win the game. If they don’t, they try again on their next turn.

Our opinion: There is no way for the players to know whether the upcoming question is easy or difficult, making it necessary to have good knowledge of the Harry Potter universe if you want to win.

Harry Potter Dobble
Harry Potter Dobble

Pros

✓ Suitable for the entire family.
✓ Simple rules.
✓ 5 variants to avoid monotony.

Cons

✕ Cards can be easily lost or damaged.
✕ Might be boring for those looking for more action.
Characteristics

● Brand: Dobble
● Number of players: 2 to 8
● Age: 6 years and over
● Duration of a game: 15 minutes
● Game type: Observation, speed

In this version of dobble, the cards display characters and symbols from Harry Potter. At the start, each player receives a pile of cards. The players’ observation skills are put to the test as each player tries to be the first to find the matching image between their card and the one in the center of the table. The first player to find the matching image quickly calls out the name of that image, and then places their card in the center of the table to be the new reference card. The game continues in this fashion until one of the players wins the game by getting rid of all of their cards.

The components of the game are quite minimal as there are only the 55 round cards and the metal box that contains them. Each card has 8 images on it. There’s always one, and only one, matching image between any two cards.

A game of Harry Potter Dobble usually lasts about 15 minutes. It is a game that can be played anywhere at any time. Moreover, the small box is easy to carry and won’t take much space if you put it in your backpack or handbag. There are several variations of this game, and you can even come up with your own!

Our opinion: Despite the simple rules, the game requires a lot of concentration. It’s a fun game for the whole family, even those who don’t know much about the Harry Potter saga.

Bloody Harry
Bloody Harry

Pros

✓ Players choose which action to take.
✓ Winning isn’t based on luck.
✓ Short games.

Cons

✕ A player can win in one turn.
✕ There are too many cards to consider.

Characteristics

● Brand: Yoka by Tsume
● Number of players: 2 to 4
● Age: 12 years and over
● length: 30 minutes
● Game type: Strategy, magic, humor

At the start of the game, each player takes 1 randomly chosen house card and 5 magic cards. Each house has a unique power that the player can benefit from. If the game is played with only 2 people, then each player takes 2 house cards.

Every turn, a player takes 2 magic cards and 1 school card (if they wish, they can choose to take 5 magic cards and no school cards). By discarding magic cards, a player collects other special cards with unique powers that could allow them to win.

School cards have effects that take place immediately. Magic cards allow players to play tricks on each other. Magic cards can also be used to cancel the effects of other cards. If at the end of a turn a player has 10 School cards, the game is over and the player with the most victory points is declared the winner.

Our opinion: It’s fun to think of ways to use your cards against your opponents and gain more victory points.

Harry Potter: Magical Beasts

Magical Beasts
Magical Beasts

Pros

✓ Accessible to children.
✓ A double-sided board representing the inside and outside of Hogwarts.
✓ A quick game.

Cons

✕ Actions depend on dice rolls.
✕ Could be too simple for some people.

Characteristics

● Brand: Goliath
● Number of players: 2 to 4
● Age: 6 years and over
● Duration of a game: 35 minutes
● Game type: Strategy, investigation

The game takes place on a double-sided board, which represents the inside and outside of Hogwarts. The principle of the game is to collect cards which allow you to identify the beast that has disappeared. Players need 4 cards to match the characteristics of the beast. The first to match all 4 of a beast’s characteristics wins.

By throwing the dice, players move and then take the clue card that corresponds to the square on which they landed. If the die shows the letter “P”, the player who threw it places their token on a “Passage” space, and turns the board to the other side. That player then gets to choose where the other players’ tokens should be placed.

Any player on a “Passage” square is untouchable. The others are at risk of having their cards stolen. The players must pass on the 2 sides of the board to collect the 4 cards (2 cards on each side).

Our opinion: The game is fun for children as they can have fun moving their tokens and stealing opponents’ cards. However, they don’t get a chance to think of ways to gain the upper hand.

Pros

✓ An atmospheric game.
✓ Harry Potter fans get to test their knowledge of the saga.
✓ The 3 categories of cards correspond to 3 different levels.

● Brand: Asmodée
● Number of players : 4 to 8
● Age: 12 years and over
● Duration of a game: 30 minutes
● Game type: Riddle, speed

The game is divided into 3 rounds. Each round is 30 seconds long. The goal of the game is for a player to be able to get their teammates to guess the cards correctly as fast as possible. Teams are formed in groups of 2 or 3, depending on the number of players.

During the first round, the player can describe what’s displayed on the card. During the second round, they can say only a single word. And during the third round, they mimic what’s on the card without speaking at all. The guessing players are allowed to give several answers until they get the right one.

It is forbidden to translate the names of characters or use nicknames. It is also not allowed to say letters of the alphabet. If the team fails to guess the card, then the card is returned to the pile. The game is over when all the cards have been used. The team that has correctly guessed the most cards wins the game.

Our opinion: The game requires good knowledge of the Harry Potter saga. The player whose turn it is must be imaginative to give good clues, the guessers will need to be perceptive and on their toes.
